Hike & Bike
May 10, 2011 City of Austin
The Kaleidoscope Village site has been notified by the city that the site plan for the Southern Walnut Creek Hike and Bike Trail is about to be filed [Case Number SPC-2010-0367C, case manager Sue Welch 974-3294 and Planner Yolanda Parada 974-2784]. This keeps the project on track to break ground in 2011. Completion of the 12 foot wide concrete trail with additional green belt and amenities would be achieved in phases.
- The local segment near Kaleidoscope Village features an extra branch trail over to the East Communities YMCA branching from near the trailhead at 6330 Garden View Dr which is near the north end of Regency Dr. 6330 Garden View Dr will have about 300 feet of paved trail connecting it to the main trail.
- There is another trailhead at 6408 Garden View which is not scheduled for a paved connection to the main trail; however, the trail planners have not acquired all necessary easements from the city to place the trail at 6330 Garden View Dr and are regarding 6408 Garden View as the obvious alternative as about five acres was donated to them to be a trailhead there and would be available to them for that purpose.
- These locations on Garden View are about two and three blocks away from Kaleidoscope Village's "backyard".
The city received a reported $8 million in federal dollars for this project which will connect at the upper and lower ends to trails extending west across Austin. The site plan must be approved to allow construction to begin: trail site plan "applicant" is Frank H. Del Castillo Jr., MWM Design Group and the "owner" is City of Austin, Richard Duane (512) 974-7750. For information contact Frank Del Castillo at (512) 453-0767. The site plan is available to be examined weekdays at One Texas Center, 505 Barton Springs Road.
